Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

 We understand that the upgrade to Windows 10 has took you to a black screen only with cursor.

I request you to follow the steps below:

  1. Try using hardware buttons to adjust display brightness up, we have a report of at least one PC which had this issue (brightness at min, increasing brightness enabled us to continue setup).
  2. While at the black screen, try using CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to start Task Manager.
  3. If it becomes visible, try finding LockAppHost.exe on the Details tab and ending the task.
    1. If this resolves the black screen, use corruption resolution steps (dism, then sfc), and run the all apps PowerShell command.
    2. Open the Task manager. Here's a tip: Press CTRL+Shift+ESC.
    3. Click File > Run New Task
    4. Make sure you have a check mark beside "Create this task with administrative privileges"
    5. Type CMD
    6. Type the following 4 commands at the CMD prompt:
      dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
      sfc /scannow
      powershell
      Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers |Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like "*SystemApps*"} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
    7. Close the CMD window.
  4. If this does not work, then Explorer.exe probably crashed. you can start Internet Explorer to achieve an LMI connection to then perform some other troubleshooting:
    1. In Task Manager, File, Run. iexplore.exe
    2. Once you achieve a connection you can use a few tools started from Task Manager to make progress:
    3. Appwiz.cpl: Look for Antivirus software or other apps that may cause issues with the shell. Uninstall them. Then restart.
    4. Compmgmt.msc: This is Computer Management, where you can find the Event Viewer to search for details on an Explorer.exe error.
    5. CMD started as Admin: Use this for various commands, like creating a new administrator user with the following commands (changing "<password>" to something of the customer's choosing):
         net user test <password> /add
      net localgroup Administrators test /add

      This will give you a test user to try, which will confirm if the issue is user or system-specific.

Hi Amit,

None of these instructions work. Probably because I'm not logged in after the computer finishes the boot.

First:

My Windows 10 update completed successfully. No black screen and no issues. Done last Sunday.

Second:

It is the graphics card driver from NVIDIA  that created the issue. This was done Tuesday night.

I suspect the problem are the display settings of the graphics card in the new driver that are corrupted that makes Windows simply not show anything.

I need to boot in safe mode so that I can fix the display settings or roll back the driver. The instructions I found searching the internet did not help me do that.

This issue is effecting me as well. I have read all over the Internet about how the windows 10 Nvidia driver is causing this issue.

This is is a seriously poor show and I'm amazed there isn't an official fix yet.....

Its not a very good start To a new os Microsoft, please fix this right away. Thanks.

I suggest you to boot into safe mode and try to update all the drivers. Check if it helps.

First, i would suggest you to download the ISO file of Windows 10 from below Microsoft Help Article and create a media tool through which you will be able create a Media Installation Disk.
Then try to perform the below methods and check if it helps.

Boot the Computer with the Windows Installation Media:
1. Start (or boot) your computer from the installation media. Insert the DVD or USB flash drive and restart your computer.
2. If you see a message asking you to "

Repair your computer to start the Windows Recovery Mode.
4. In the Windows Recovery Environment, on the Choose an option screen, tap or click on
Troubleshoot.
5. Click on
Advanced Options .
6. Then on click on Startup Settings.

7. Click on Restart and choose safe mode with Networking or Low resolution.

8. Then try to update the drivers.

I updated from Windows 7 a few day ago and Windows 10 worked fine. On Tuesday night I updated the driver for the NVIDIA graphics card.

At one point the screen when black with only a mouse cursor. This happened before with Windows 7 but it always came back. After waiting an hour nothing changed. I couldn't do anything.

Rebooted and got the same screen after the Windows start up screen. I could not login as far as I can see. I can't start it in safe mode since that requires the screen.

Since I was using a dual monitor, the laptop monitor and an LCD monitor connected to the hdmi port. I tried booting without the second monitor. It this case I get a single pixel blue line on the right and bottom of the screen. Occasionally, when I move the mouse cursor to the right of the screen I get a blue ribbon just like in Windows 8, but with nothing on it.

My Dell laptop come with facial recognition, which has not been configured. This may affect my login because I need to select with the mouse that I want to enter a password.

EDIT:

The upgrade to Windows 10 is not the issue. The issue is with the video card driver from NVIDIA.

I have found instructions that doing Shift-Restart from the login screen will restart in safe mode. What I need, and can't find anywhere, is a keyboard shortcut that will allow me to restart my laptop in safe mode from the login screen.

Alternatively, to tell the Dell Facial recognition software to let me enter the password could also work, since I will to do the restart once the desktop is active.

Booting into safe mode is easier said than done in Win10 on a high performance PC with SSD drives.  I came across a post that stated the boot sequence is 'to fast' to catch by pressing F8 or whatever in Win 10.  And telling the PC to boot into safemode upon a restart without being able to see the screen is next to impossible.

My pc (a Dell Precision T5810) computer is fully booting and running - the video is just not displayed.  My workaround - which I must do every time I reboot - is to disconnect 1 of the monitors prior to turning on the PC.

The PC boots fine and displays the output.  Then plug the second monitor back in....

I tried many things to fix this. The one that worked was to add NoLockScreen to the registry as suggested here:

(This is for Win 8 but works for Win 10).

Basically, add a DWORD value to the

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Personalization

registry key - if there's no "Personalization" key, add one.

Be careful, your mileage may vary, not responsible for damage/issues/etc use at own risk.

But it worked for me.

Also had this problem a couple months ago with the Fast Ring insider builds and am running a GTX 970. Appears to be fixed with the latest NVidia driver as of now 372.54 after removing some files.

I recently updated to build 14905.1000 and as usual when upgrading, it installed the latest NVidia display driver. I would typically uninstall it deleting the driver via Device Manager, use the Show/Hide updates utility to hide the new driver, and run with a October 2015 version of the driver.

This time around I removed the current driver, then removed the October 2015 driver that worked (deleting driver files). I then ran the Show/Hide updates utility again to make sure no NVidia drivers got installed. To make extra sure an NVidia driver didn't get reinstalled, I removed all NVidia .inf files from my system with the following PowerShell command:

Get-WindowsDriver -All -Online | where { $_.ProviderName -contains "nvidia" } | foreach { del $_.OriginalFileName }

I uninstalled all NVidia products from Add/Remove Programs and renamed the NVidia directories in Program Files and Program Files (x86). At this point, the display driver was the Basic Microsoft one. Next I rebooted and navigated to System32 and SysWOW64 directories. Right-click on the column bar and select "More...", then check "Product name". Sort by Product name and move/delete anything that starts with NVidia. Afterwards, I was able to install the 372.54 version of the driver and have display output after rebooting.

I suspect that some .dll's from the old driver version remained in the System32/SysWOW64 directories after the new driver was installed, and the new version of these dll's may either reside elsewhere or for some reason did not overwrite the old copy. Whatever was calling them probably did not use the full path.

I found much simpler way how to deal with this. As I had a blank screen and unable to do anything, I took the video card out and substituted it with my older, yet still working video card  (the same edge connector of course), That gave me back my monitor display and I went to program files-nvidea file a deleted all driver updates. After that I inserted my original video card and downloaded driver etc from Nvidea web side. Works perfect again.

That works if you are on a desktop pc. For a laptop i am not sure i can take out the video card. Any thoughts on a laptop solution ?

same problem as above. A perfectly working windows 10; nvidia driver update; result - black screen with a mouse pointer.

Please help me find keyboard shortcuts which allow me to get into the safe mode without seeing the screen !

appreciate if some one can direct me to another solution for this problem

Hi

This is going to be a fairly long explanation of the issues that I am having but please stick with me as I am literally at my witts end trying to fix this problem.

First off computer specs

Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth FX990

Processor: AMD Zambezi Bulldozer

GPU: Have tried various Nvidia cards (see issue description below)

RAM: 32GB Ripjaw 1800 4x8GB

PSU 850W

HDD: 2x 1GB spindle WD drives

**************************

Ok so when I first upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 back in 2015 everything worked fine sometime latter I upgraded my GPU to an ASUS GeForce GTX 970 and still there were no issues everything worked fine.

I mainly use my rig for Fligh Simulation namely Microsoft Flight Simulator X and lockheed martin Prepar3d.

Sometime later I started experiencing issues where if there was no user input on the computer for about 15 mins the display would just completely freeze, the only way around this was a hard reboot. The situation then got progressively worse where I now could not even get to the login screen, would constantly have spinning dots which never progressed to the login screen, I left this for days and it never progressed past the spinning dots. I was able to get the machine to boot into safe mode by powering off during boot up a few times and then using the recovery console however none of the recovery options worked, Startup repair, system restore etc all came back with a message that Windows was not able to complete the operation.

I then had a theory that there was some kind of corruption on the HDD so ran CHKDSK  /f/r, a number of errors were found and fixed and I think I was then able to get to the login screen in normal mode one time and then 10 mins later the display just went black with only the mouse cursor visable, rebooting after this just took me back to the spinning dots issue previously experienced.

I then suspected corrupt display card drivers so I used DDU to uninstall the Nvidia GTX 970 drivers and stop Windows 10 from downloading the drivers though Windows Update. The system would then boot fine in normal mode but with only the Windows default display driver, The moment I Installed the GTX 970 driver (I experimented with umpteen versions)  the display would go funny during the driver install, sometimes go totally black with only the mouse visible and sometimes would just have weird garbage pixilated images on the screen.

I ran SFC /Scannow and was getting an error about Windows Resource protection when it got to about 65%. I was also getting errors running DISM which I was able to fix the DISM errors by running "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" however I was still not able to complete an SFC /scannow without the Windows Resource Protection error.

After a lot of research I found two folders on my C: Drive $Windows._BT and a $Windows._ws which I deleted. After deleting these I was then able to run an SFC /Scannow successfully without any errors. I was able to run the startup repair options from the recovery console and even able to install cumulative windows updates which had not worked since these issues began, but Still the spinning dots before login and crash during display driver installs continued.

I was able to also then do an in place upgrade after deleting the two folders above which I was not able to do before but Still the spinning dots before login and crash during display driver installs continued.

I then thought that the Asus GTX 970 card must have been faulty so to test it I removed the existing hard drive and installed a brand new hard drive and installed a fresh copy of Windows 10. I was surprised when everything worked 100% the GTX 970 drivers installed and I left it running for days with no issues so that ruled out the graphics card being faulty!

Next I put the old hard drive back in again getting the display issues but I then changed the GTX 970 graphics card with an Nvidia Quadro card,  I was surprised that everything worked on the old hard drive without any issues with the Quadro card.

I was then convinced that it was the GTX 970 that was faulty so I took out the Quadro card and put in a brand new MSI Geforce GTX 1060 hoping that this would resolve the issues but alas I was getting exactly the same issues with the brand new GTX 1060 that I was getting with the GTX 970. Spinning dots before login screen, displays crashing while installing drivers etc. Why was the Quadro card working with no problems but any GeForce card both the 970 & the 1060 caused the issues described above?

I am now a month down the line with this working on it every night for hours. I know that I should probably just install a fresh copy of Windows 10 and be done with it as I know this will work however I really would like to get to the root cause of this issue and don't really want to have to reinstall all of my flight simulators and addons and re configure them again, a task which has take me years to get it how I want it.

Other things I have done to try and fix this.

Run multiple virus scans (nothing found)

Run a rootkit scan GMER, I get a potential issue when running this with the csrss.exe and also the machine will totally just switch off in the middle of the scan.

I have fixed a number of DCOM permission issues which were showing in the event log.

In conclusion there must be something wrong with my Windows 10 installation and specifically any GeForce Graphics cards/drivers as other Nvidia Quadro cards work fine.

Any help to try and resolve this would be wonderful and also let me have a good night sleep for once in about a month.
